RIAI Regional Award 2002

The brief for the Education Centre is a building for in-service courses for Primary and Secondary school teachers.  The Royal Irish Academy with Lecture Theatre, Library and Meeting Rooms was in the back of the Architects’ mind in the design of the building.  There is an overlap and interconnection of functions in all parts of the building, for example, the Entrance Hall and Passage are also a Restaurant and Exhibition Gallery.

The Education Centre is located at the School of Art College site on the Galway-Mayo Institute campus.  The building is arranged on a single floor generally with a first floor gallery arranged around the circulation area.  The first elevation addresses a circular courtyard with a walnut tree.  A curved stone table along a curved window overlooks this area.
